What Happens to Links and Bookmarks

When you split a PDF, internal links that point to pages in other splits will break. Bookmarks that reference removed pages disappear. Cross-references in academic papers may become invalid. This is unavoidable — the split files are independent documents.

For documents with heavy cross-referencing (legal documents, technical manuals), consider whether splitting is the right approach. Sometimes extracting and sharing the full document with a note about which pages to read is better than splitting.

Splitting Encrypted PDFs

If the PDF has a password, you need to enter it before splitting. If the PDF has permission restrictions (no editing, no copying), most splitters will respect those restrictions. Our PDF Splitter handles password-protected PDFs — enter the password and split normally.
